What does Folders need access to?
Only what you point it at. macOS asks before Folders can read a folder or drive you add. Apple Photos access is optional and only needed to show your Photos library in the sidebar. Automation access is used for one thing: Open in Photos, which shows an item in the Photos app.
Does Folders change my files?
Only when you ask. Indexing and previews are read only and never write to a drive. When you rename, move, copy, trash or import, Folders does exactly that, the same as Finder. Trash means the Trash, so you can put things back.
Can I browse a drive that is unplugged?
Yes. Once a drive is indexed, its files, folders, previews and details stay in Folders. The drive shows as disconnected, and you can still search it, browse it and see where everything lives. Opening the original file needs the drive.
How long does the first index take?
It depends on the drive and how many files it holds. Folders reads the small preview your camera saved inside each file first, so you can browse while it runs. Sharper previews keep building later, when your Mac is idle.
Where are the index and previews stored?
On your Mac, in your user Library under Application Support. Nothing is uploaded. To start over, open Folders Settings and choose Rebuild Index.
How does Folders count copies?
Folders fingerprints each file from its size and contents, so the same photo on two drives counts as two copies even if the names differ. A file that exists in only one place is shown in the drive's details, so you can back it up.
Which Macs can run Folders?
Any Mac with Apple silicon or Intel running macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every download includes the full app free for 14 days. No card is needed to start.
What does "public beta" mean?
Folders is for sale and everything in it works, but it is not fully polished yet. Expect rough edges and frequent updates. The beta notes list what works and what is still rough.
How do I send beta feedback?

How do I update Folders?
Folders checks for updates once a day and offers new versions as they come out. To check now, choose Check for Updates in the Folders menu.
Is Folders a subscription?
Only if you want it to be. After the trial, buy Folders once for $99 or pay $4.99 a month. Both unlock the same app, sold directly from this site, with no account to create.
How do I cancel the monthly plan?
Email support@foldersformac.com from the address you used at checkout. You keep access until the end of the month you paid for, and you are not charged again.
How do I get a refund?
Email support@foldersformac.com within 30 days of a payment, from the email address you used at checkout, and we will refund that payment in full.
